Ipswich Town are reportedly set to sign Rangers star John Lundstram on a free transfer at the end of the season, according to Gunebakis journalist Ezgi Alp.
The reporter for the Turkish news outlet reported via her personal X account on 18 April that Trabzonspor are keen on signing the 30-year-old midfielder but it seems English Championship leaders Ipswich have stolen a march on the Super Lig club.
Lundstram’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, but the expectation was that the midfielder would come to an agreement to extend his stay at Ibrox, having been a key player under Philippe Clement this term.
However, the report suggests that Championship promotion-chasers Ipswich have won the race for his signature, beating out interest from Turkish outfit Trabzonspor in the process, who were hesitant due to the player’s £32,000-a-week (£1.7million-a-year) wage demands.
Rangers set to lose John Lundstram?
As the Gers’ season – which had started so brightly – threatens to come crashing down after a string of disappointing results, things appear to be going from bad to worse with the news that Lundstram could be set to leave.
The 30-year-old central midfielder has been a trusted figure under Clement – he has been a virtual ever-present in the middle of the park and a regular fixture in the side. In fact, he is one of just four players at the club to have played more than 4,000 minutes across all competitions. For context, John Souttar, who is fifth on the list, has played over 1,000 minutes fewer than Lundstram.
It is clear, then, that Clement would prefer not to see one of his key players walk away for nothing, and the expectation was that he would pen a new deal. But it appears Ipswich have stolen a march on the competition and, should Lundstram depart, he will leave a significant hole to fill – and generate no transfer fee to help that process along.
