Christian Benítez, a former Birmingham City striker, passed away due to heart failure, as confirmed by his club, al-Jaish. The Ecuadorian international died on Monday shortly after being hospitalized with severe stomach pain, just hours after his debut for the Qatari club. The club’s statement read: “We have received the medical reports from official state entities, which stated that the sudden death was caused by heart failure.”
Luis Chiriboga, president of the Ecuador football federation, stated on Tuesday that the 27-year-old was taken to the hospital with sharp stomach pains, developed peritonitis, and died of cardiorespiratory arrest.
Benítez, known as Chucho, joined al-Jaish last month from Mexico’s Club America, after stints with El Nacional, Santos Laguna, and Birmingham. He had been rumored to be returning to England with Tottenham earlier this summer.
Al-Jaish announced that Benítez’s body would be returned to Ecuador once legal matters are resolved. Their statement added: “The club will cover all expenses for transferring the body from Doha via private aircraft. We promise the farewell and transfer will be conducted at the highest level to honor the player’s name and reputation. All players and club affiliates will participate in the ceremony.
“The club management reaffirms its unwavering support to Christian’s family and stands by them during this difficult time.”
