Mads Frokjaer recognized that Preston North End had to put in significant effort and rely on a bit of luck to secure their 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough on Saturday. Despite the challenges, the 25-year-old Danish midfielder felt that Preston fully deserved the point they earned at the Riverside. Frokjaer scored the equalizing goal just before half-time with a composed volley, capitalizing on his only clear-cut chance of the match. Reflecting on his performance, he acknowledged that while his goal was a positive, he aims to improve his overall contribution by increasing his attempts on goal. “In my last season in Denmark, I scored from six of my last nine shots,” Frokjaer noted. “I need to take more shots and see if I can maintain or improve my percentage. Being more aggressive and selfish with my opportunities is crucial. I scored three goals last season, which was decent, but I aim to be more impactful this season.”
Frokjaer shared his thoughts on the recent changes at Preston North End, particularly the fresh start under new manager Paul Heckingbottom, who was appointed in late August. He found the new management approach to be refreshing and noted that it has provided a new beginning for everyone involved. “It’s like a breath of fresh air for the squad,” Frokjaer commented. “Even for those who didn’t play much last season and the new arrivals, everyone gets a new chance to prove themselves. The new setup is more detailed compared to before, which can be both good and bad. It’s a different style that keeps everyone on their toes.”
Preston’s summer signings, including Jeppe Okkels, Stefan Thordarson, Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Sam Greenwood, and Josh Bowler, have strengthened the squad significantly. Frokjaer feels that the current roster, with its mix of experienced and technically skilled players, is well-equipped for the season ahead. “The squad is looking strong. We have 22 senior players now, all with experience at a high level. It’s a competitive group, and the quality added should help us improve.”
Despite a tumultuous start to the season, with managerial changes affecting the team, Frokjaer remains hopeful. “It’s been a strange start with unexpected events, but that’s part of football. We need to stay positive and adapt to the changes. Hopefully, we can build some consistency and get the season on track.”
