Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has shared his thoughts after Zach Merrett addressed speculation about his future in an interview with *The Age*. Merrett confirmed that he had been informed about a lucrative offer from St Kilda, but ultimately chose to remain committed to the Bombers.
Merrett’s decision to stay with Essendon led Lloyd to question the situation at St Kilda. He speculated that not everyone at the club might have been on the same page regarding the offer to Merrett.
“You wonder whether there’s some people at St Kilda who are not working on the same page,” Lloyd remarked, suggesting that internal communication or strategy may not have been cohesive during their attempt to lure Merrett away from Essendon.
Lloyd also raised the possibility that the approach from St Kilda might have been a tactic to help Merrett leverage a better deal at Essendon. He noted that the offer could have been used as a bargaining chip to negotiate an improved contract with the Bombers. “Was this a position for Zach Merrett to get more money out of the Bombers?” Lloyd pondered, indicating that the situation may have been advantageous for Merrett’s negotiations.
Ultimately, Lloyd believes the entire episode might lead to Merrett and his manager seeking to re-negotiate his contract with Essendon. “It was put to me pretty early on but out of it all, he may look to re-negotiate what he and his manager feel he’s worth at the club,” Lloyd added, implying that Merrett’s value to the Bombers could now be reassessed in light of the external interest.
Merrett’s loyalty to Essendon appears firm, but Lloyd’s comments suggest that the St Kilda offer, whether fully serious or not, may have influenced the dynamics around his contract negotiations and future at the Bombers.
