As talk about transfers becomes more frequent going into the summer, Celtic continues to be linked with several new goalkeepers.
Just yesterday, Burnley’s Ari Muric emerged as a potential option with Ugurcan Cakir, Alex McCarthy, and Etienne Vaessan having gone before him.
Perhaps the most exciting name to be linked with a summer switch to Glasgow so far, though, is Koen Casteels.
According to a report in the Daily Mail from Stephen McGowan, the Belgian has been added to a list of potential Joe Hart replacements.
Set to depart Wolfsburg this summer after making 275 appearances for the club, now free agent Casteels said his goodbyes to the Bundesliga outfit in his final appearance for them at the weekend.
Given his experience in one of Europe’s top leagues, the 31-year-old would be an elite addition to the Parkhead ranks but he is not short of suitors.
He has already held talks with Anderlecht but their hopes of winning the Belgian title and resultantly automatically qualifying for next year’s Champions League are all but in the bin after defeat to Club Brugge on Sunday.
This may edge Celtic ahead in Casteel’s list of preferred destinations and when asked whether the Hoops are interested in his services, the stopper refused to confirm nor deny.
Especially on a free, Celtic signing someone with the experience of the eight-time capped Belgian goalkeeper would most certainly gain a warm reception from the supporters.
Out of all the ‘keepers who have been named as potential Hart successors so far, Casteels sticks out as a hugely desirable option.
