Kenny Miller has questioned whether the decision for Rangers to stage their friendly with Manchester United at Murrayfield was “pre-planned”.
The reason for this is that on June 20, it was revealed that the Gers had begun discussions about spending the start of the Scottish Premiership season temporarily at Murrayfield [Scottish Sun].
Work on the Copland Road Stand started at the end of the 2023–2024 season, and it was anticipated to be completed by the start of the next term.
This obviously hasn’t worked out, though, as the project manager was fired over the fiasco [Scottish Sun, June 20].
In his Daily Record piece from June 30, Sky Sports analyst Miller said, “You have to wonder whether this friendly they’ve had penciled in against Manchester United in Edinburgh was pre-planned because they knew about the Ibrox issues.”
What happens to the Rangers in the wake of the Ibrox scandal?
Nothing can match the atmosphere that can be created at Ibrox, even though Rangers don’t necessarily have to play at their home field.
Although they can continue to play their usual game, players will probably feel uncomfortable and wonder why they are there.
On the other hand, club executives might have seen it more cynically as a means of allowing the players to acclimate to the venue before engaging in competitive matches there.
