That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the deal is likely to receive scrutiny from the Premier League due to the figures involved.

Newcastle reportedly paid £20 million to sign 30-year-old goalkeeper Odisseas Vlachodimos just before the 2023/24 accounting deadline on 30 June, while midfielder Elliot Anderson was transferred to Nottingham Forest for £35 million the same day. Both clubs were close to the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) limit, with a breach potentially resulting in a points deduction.

According to *The Athletic* on 13 September, Vlachodimos signed a five-year deal with Newcastle. Borson suggested the transfer may face scrutiny from the Premier League, calling it a “very expensive” deal designed to avoid a PSR violation. Speaking to *Football Insider*, Borson noted that the deal “seems to make very little sense” outside of that context and expects the Premier League to review it, given how the transfer has been portrayed in the media. He emphasized that while there is no insider information, the specific nature of the reporting suggests that the deal and its relation to PSR will attract attention.

“I’m not claiming they’re going to investigate, but it’s likely they’ll raise some questions.

It’s possible they’ve already asked those questions and are satisfied with the answers, but we don’t know for sure.”
