BREAKING NEWS: PL boss ban following private talks with PGMOL chief Howard Webb | view details

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has avoided a touchline ban following private discussions with PGMOL chief Howard Webb after being shown a red card in last Sunday’s intense 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest at the Amex Stadium.

Both Hurzeler and Forest coach Nuno Espirito Santo were sent off during the game. Hurzeler’s dismissal came late in the second half after his heated reaction to Morgan Gibbs-White’s challenge on Joao Pedro, which injured the Brazilian.

Hurzeler, who was initially charged with ‘acting in an improper manner,’ confirmed that after his conversation with Webb, he will only face a fine and will be on the touchline for Brighton’s upcoming match against Chelsea. Speaking about the incident, Hurzeler said, “I know what the fine will be, and I know I will be on the sidelines against Chelsea.”

Reflecting on the red card, the 31-year-old explained: “At first, I wasn’t sure why I was sent off, but after speaking to Howard Webb, I learned it was for stepping onto the pitch. If every coach got a red card for that, many would be banned. It was an emotional moment; I was defending my player after a tough tackle.”

Hurzeler also praised his conversation with Webb, noting: “The positive thing is the openness. He listened to me and explained clearly. It’s important to have a respectful relationship, and the exchange was very respectful.”

Nuno Espirito Santo was also charged by the FA for improper conduct and allegedly using abusive language towards a match official. Meanwhile, Morgan Gibbs-White could face an additional suspension after being charged with insulting a match official during the same match. Both Forest figures have until Friday to respond to the charges.

Fabian Hurzeler

Fabian Hurzeler was sent off during Brighton’s heated 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest last weekend. Brighton striker Joao Pedro, who left the Amex on crutches after the match, is now set to miss the team’s upcoming visit to Stamford Bridge. The 23-year-old forward had only just returned to action after a knock he sustained while on international duty with Brazil.

While Hurzeler is hesitant to provide a specific timeline for Pedro’s recovery, it is not believed that the injury will sideline him for an extended period.

The controversy at the Amex occurs amidst reports that Premier League clubs are preparing to contact PGMOL chief Howard Webb to express their concerns over what they view as a decline in refereeing standards this season. Title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal were particularly frustrated with Michael Oliver’s officiating during their own 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium last Sunday.
