Philippe Clement might need to persuade Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Gustavo Puerta to join Rangers on loan, as reported by the Daily Record on August 18. Despite a £3 million bid from Brondby, the Bundesliga club may prefer a loan deal, according to claims by Sun’s Alan Nixon. Additionally, Tipsbladet reported on August 12 that Rangers have also made an offer for the 21-year-old Colombian.
Bringing Puerta to Ibrox could be a strategic move for Rangers. Although his experience is limited, his involvement with a title-winning Bundesliga team like Bayer Leverkusen suggests that he has been exposed to high-level competition, which is vital for Rangers’ aspirations both domestically and in Europe.
Puerta’s technical skills and passing range make him a promising candidate to fill the midfield role left vacant by Ryan Jack’s departure. Securing him on loan, potentially with an option to buy, would provide Rangers with the flexibility to evaluate his fit within the team without a long-term financial commitment, which is particularly important given the club’s budget constraints.
Overall, adding Puerta could address an immediate need in midfield and provide a significant boost to Rangers in their title race.
Whether or not Puerta fancies a move to Ibrox and if Clement manages to convince him, remains to be seen.
