Wolverhampton Wanderers are keeping a close watch on the upcoming summer transfer window, with manager Gary O’Neil eager to strengthen his team following the disappointment of failing to secure a crucial target in January.
Expressing his frustration, O’Neil criticized Wolves’ inability to sign a striker during the January transfer window, directing his dissatisfaction towards Fosun in a post-match outburst after having to rely on academy players to cover for key injuries.
Managing a small squad has proven challenging for O’Neil, with the lack of depth attributed to the club’s focus on generating profits through player sales in the summer of 2023.
Despite these obstacles, the 40-year-old manager has navigated through adversity, with Wolves delivering notable performances that dispel any doubts about their ability to compete in the Premier League, addressing concerns raised by Julen Lopetegui.
January’s frustrations arose as O’Neil was compelled to deploy academy talents due to successive injuries in the forward line, resulting in a drop in form that could have been avoided with additional reinforcements during the transfer window.
Sky Sports journalist Johnny Phillips recently provided insights into Wolves’ pursuit of two strikers this season, shedding light on the club’s interest in Armando Broja and Carlos Vinicius, who are both affiliated with Fulham.
Contrary to popular belief, Phillips revealed that Carlos Vinicius was the primary target, whereas Broja was not seriously considered by Wolves. Phillips explained, “I spoke to the people involved in the Fulham side of the deal when he went to Fulham, and Wolves were never really a serious destination for Broja. The financial aspects didn’t align for that transfer.”
Regarding Vinicius, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Fulham, Phillips noted that Wolves did explore the possibility of signing him, while Broja moved to Craven Cottage from Chelsea for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign.
