After transferring over to Brisbane in 2023, Gunston made his way back home to his triple-premiership club in 2024.
As Coach Sam Mitchell had stated, he was disappointed to see Gunston move during the 2022 trade window, and it was evident why during his comeback season. Hawthorn’s unexpected run to the finals demonstrated Gunston’s seasoned leadership, as he produced more on-field work than in 2023 and helped nurture a youthful forward corps, particularly the growth of father-son Calsher Dear.

Although it was anticipated that Dear would advance through the Box Hill VFL levels in 2024, he made his debut in Round 8 and remained there for the rest of the season. Dear’s ascent to playing the AFL was greatly aided by Gunston’s instruction and experience, and they bonded particularly well because they had lost their fathers. An unanticipated but significant benefit of Hawthorn’s purchase of the triple-premiership forward was Gunston’s off-field help.
Of course, Gunston’s brilliance extended beyond the pitch. In 2024, he kicked 29 goals in 18 games, including two four-goal hauls and a five-goal haul against Richmond in Round 23. Even with a young, quickly developing forward line, Gunston demonstrated his ability to perform at the highest level.
