Having been one of only three Blues to feature in every game of 2024, midfielder Matthew Kennedy would have been surprised to hear that Carlton plans to move him on for the 2025 season, ending his seven-year stint with the club.
Despite Carlton’s deep midfield talent pool, Kennedy offers valuable experience and depth, along with some forward capabilities. Drafted with pick 13 in the 2015 National Draft, Kennedy’s standout season came in 2022, where he averaged nearly 25 disposals across 17 games, playing a key role behind Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh.
Although he has since lost favor to Adam Cerra and George Hewett, Kennedy is likely to attract interest from other teams seeking a similar midfield role.
Among potential suitors, the Pies could benefit from adding a 27-year-old inside midfielder like Kennedy to support Nick Daicos at stoppages. With Scott Pendlebury nearing the end of his career, Tom Mitchell past his prime, and Jordan De Goey’s reliability in question, Collingwood’s midfield depth is somewhat lacking. While they have Daicos, Jack Crisp, and some promising young players, Kennedy could provide the stability and experience they need to strengthen their center and push for contention.
