Matija Sarkic joined Millwall last summer after leaving Wolves. The 26-year-old, who also played for Aston Villa, Birmingham City, and Stoke City, was born in Grimsby and represented Montenegro.
Millwall goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has passed away at the age of 26, the club has announced. A statement on the club’s official website read: “Millwall Football Club is profoundly devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has died at the age of 26. Sarkic, the Lions’ number one goalkeeper, made 33 appearances for the club since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2023.”
The statement continued: “Montenegro international Matija proudly represented his country on numerous occasions. Everyone at the club extends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends during this incredibly sad time. The club will make no further comment at this time and requests that Matija’s family’s privacy is respected.”
The Montenegro Football Association issued a statement saying that Sarkic had “died suddenly” on Saturday morning. The statement continued: “A beloved member of the ‘Brave Falcons,’ an eternally smiling individual, played in nine games for our ‘A’ team, demonstrating his significance to the squad.”
The statement continued: “Alongside his twin brother Oliver, he progressed through all the junior categories of the Montenegrin national team. In the jersey of the iconic London club Millwall, he made his mark, which was poised to become part of a larger and more remarkable story. His untimely death has brought great sorrow to the Sarkic family. The Football Association of Montenegro extends its heartfelt condolences to the Sarkic family.”
Grimsby-born Sarkic began his career in Anderlecht’s academy before moving to Aston Villa in 2015.
