Breaking News: Two rivals circling contracted Hawthorn veteran: AFL trade news

Sam Frost, 31, has drawn interest from both Sydney and St Kilda as Hawthorn looks to strengthen its backline this off-season.

Reports suggest the Swans and Saints are considering making a move for the experienced Hawthorn defender ahead of next month’s trade period. Frost recently extended his contract with the Hawks, signing a one-year deal during an impressive 2024 season where he became a reliable figure in Sam Mitchell’s defense.

However, Frost’s season was unfortunately cut short just before the club’s semi-final against Port Adelaide due to a foot injury, despite having played every game up until that point.

Although he secured his future with a contract extension in July, Frost’s position in the team could be in jeopardy as Hawthorn is aiming to sign St Kilda free agent Josh Battle and West Coast defender Tom Barrass. Both players have expressed interest in joining the Hawks and are expected to arrive on significant deals, potentially pushing Frost down the depth chart. Meanwhile, James Blanck is targeting a return from an ACL injury next season, and youngster Jai Serong is vying for more senior opportunities.

This situation has reportedly led to external interest, with AFL.com.au noting that Sydney and St Kilda are weighing up possible moves for the former GWS and Melbourne player.

The Swans have found some reinforcement for Tom McCartin this season with the emergence of key defender Lewis Melican, but head coach John Longmire still lacks depth in his defensive options. Notably, 2023 recruit Joel Hamling is being used as a forward in the VFL, limiting his impact in defense. Additionally, Harry Arnold has struggled with persistent injuries since joining the club last season and has yet to feature at the senior level, similar to rookie Patrick Snell and young talent William Edwards.

St Kilda, facing the likely exit of Josh Battle, is also in need of new defensive options. However, veteran Dougal Howard is expected to remain with the club for at least another season. The Saints are likely to introduce more youth to their defensive lineup, with NGA prospect Adrian Cole projected to join their list during the November draft.

Sam Frost, who has played 183 AFL games, brings considerable experience to the table. He spent three years with GWS before moving to Victoria in a trade to the Melbourne Demons in 2014. After playing 70 games in the red and blue, he moved to Hawthorn, where he has spent the last six years.
