BREAKING NEWS: United and Charlton Athletic are battling for a Premier League midfield player.

According to the South London Press, Athletic is in talks to recruit Luke Berry of Luton Town, while Oxford United is rumoured to be interested as well.

Ahead of the 2024–2025 season, Charlton Athletic is preparing for a significant summer transfer window in an effort to bolster Nathan Jones’ roster.
Under the former Luton Town manager, the Addicks avoided relegation, and with several players moving on, a significant recruitment drive is anticipated at The Valley.

It has now been reported that negotiations are taking place on a striking addition.

According to The South London Press, Luke Berry, whose deal at demoted Premier League team Luton Town is about to expire, is being discussed by Charlton Athletic. The 31-year-old will therefore be travelling.

But it’s not just the Addicks who are expressing interest. Oxford United, the champions of the League One play-offs, are likewise eager, according to Darren Witcoop’s separate report.

Returning to the EFL

Berry and Luton Town appear to be returning to the EFL, if not together.

After a year in the Premier League, the Hatters will be strong candidates for promotion, but they won’t have the midfielder on their roster for the first time since 2017. Berry joined the team in 2017 and played 184 games for them, scoring 26 goals and dishing out 17 assists.

Despite being a Football League stalwart for most of his career, Berry considers challenging himself in the Premier League to be a true high point.

During his 17 Premier League appearances for Luton, he registered two goals and one assist. But it appears like the EFL will be his next stop.

A reunification for Jones?

Berry worked for a considerable amount of time at Luton Town under the direction of current Charlton Athletic manager Jones.

This summer’s reunion might be appealing to both of them. His background would make him an invaluable addition to the Addicks midfield, and the fact that he already knows the Welshman should facilitate an easier transition should he decide to move.

If Oxford United moves, though, Berry might find them to be a compelling choice.

Des Buckingham’s team is aiming for the Championship in order to provide football at a higher level. With Charlton Athletic looking to get Berry in, only time will tell if they make a play for him.
