Danny Rohl made an intriguing comment about transfers ahead of Sheffield Wednesday’s defeat to Luton Town over the weekend.

The Owls were unfortunate to lose their latest Championship match. Despite being 1-0 up, they eventually fell 2-1 to Luton Town, with the officiating decisions coming under criticism. Di’Shon Bernard was shown a red card for what was deemed a handball, a pivotal moment that contributed to Luton’s comeback.

Sheffield Wednesday remain without a win since their opening day victory against Plymouth Argyle. They now face league leaders West Brom at Hillsborough this weekend.

While the immediate focus is on current results, manager Danny Rohl is already looking ahead. Before the Luton game, the German coach shared his plans for the future, stating he has a clear vision for the next two transfer windows. He commented, “The next window may be a bit far off, but I already have a clear idea in my mind about what we need to do in the next two windows.”

Sheffield Wednesday appeared to have a successful summer transfer window by most accounts. The Owls acted quickly, securing eight new signings before heading off for their pre-season tour in Austria and Germany. Their final addition was the loan of Shea Charles from Southampton, which rounded off their transfer activity.

However, despite what looked like a solid window, Wednesday haven’t replicated the strength they showed in the latter half of last season. There are still noticeable gaps in the squad. Rohl, though, is aware that the project at Hillsborough is long-term, with at least two more transfer windows likely needed before significant progress is visible.

What Sheffield Wednesday need to do in the next two transfer windows

What Danny Rohl has planned for Sheffield Wednesday’s next two transfer windows remains unclear, but it seems likely he’ll focus on players whose contracts expire in 2025. Before the Luton match, Rohl mentioned:

“I had a talk with Kevin [Beadell, head of recruitment] yesterday, and now we will discuss with the chairman. Which players we want to extend, which we can extend, and which players want to extend. Some players, we might discuss in more detail in January, not now, to assess the situation.”

Among those reportedly out of contract in 2025 are key figures like Barry Bannan, Liam Palmer, Michael Smith, and Pierce Charles. A significant part of Rohl’s focus will likely be on finding replacements for these players, especially Bannan, who is central to the team. Replacing both Bannan and Palmer’s experience will be essential, alongside addressing the squad’s age by bringing in younger players.

This is just the beginning of the challenges Sheffield Wednesday face in upcoming windows. With James Beadle and Shea Charles set to return to their parent clubs and a shortage of center-backs and attacking firepower, Rohl’s priority will be to replace those departing players next summer.
