The Athletic reports that Wolves have provided “strong references” to West Ham United regarding potential manager Julen Lopetegui.
Although no contract has been finalised, the report from May 6th stated that an agreement had been struck for the Spaniard to succeed current manager David Moyes.
Lopetegui’s history of work, which includes his stints with Wolves and the Spain national team, has impressed West Ham. Bayern Munich was also interested in the player, but it seems the 57-year-old is planning to come to London after making a late inquiry.
Positive things are said about Julen Lopetegui at West Ham United.
The bulk of West Ham supporters, who had hoped for a younger manager to take Moyes’ position in the dugout, have not been overly thrilled about the possible appointment of Lopetegui.
During his talks with AC Milan, the Spaniard was met with an equally cold welcome; the Serie A team withdrew from a deal because of the intensity of the backlash from their supporters.
But there’s a chance that the Irons supporters’ concerns about Lopetegui’s lack of progressivity are unjustified.
Hammers fans most likely associate Lopetegui with his time at Wolves, although his tenures coaching Sevilla in La Liga and the Spain national team may better capture his approach.
In his two years as Spain’s head coach, Lopetegui oversaw 20 games without losing a single one. The only reason he was fired on the eve of the 2018 World Cup was because there were rumours circulating that he had signed a contract to join Real Madrid after the competition.
