Wellington keeper Paulsen signs for Bournemouth in record deal
Alex Paulsen, a native of Wellington, Arizona, has become one of the many Australian athletes playing in Europe’s “big-five” leagues.
The English Premier League team AFC Bournemouth has signed goalkeeper Paulsen, 21, in what Wellington refers to be “the biggest outgoing transfer in Phoenix history, eclipsing Sarpreet Singh’s move to German giants Bayern Munich in 2019.”
Nestory Irankunda, an Adelaide United adolescent, is also close to making a high-profile transfer to Bayern Munich.
Wellington’s player of the year, Paulsen, who also started in goal for the A-League All Stars in their most recent 8-0 victory over EPL team Newcastle United, is expected to represent his country in the Olympic Games in Paris. Paulsen has capped by New Zealand at the under-17 and under-23 levels.
His transfer coincides with the arrival of Daniel Bennie, an A-League Men player from Perth Glory, at Queens Park Rangers, an English Championship team.
Coach Giancarlo Italiano of Wellington said, “I’m really proud AP’s scored such a big deal with such a big club in the world’s best league.” “It shows what we’re building here at the Phoenix by helping a young player move to a Premier League club.”
