Burnley: Potential replacement for Vincent Kompany named ahead of Bayern Munich move

Vincent Kompany’s assistant is unlikely to move with him to the Allianz Arena and could take charge at Turf Moor instead

Burnley’s assistant coach Craig Bellamy has been mentioned as a potential Vincent Kompany replacement at Turf Moor, although he is not anticipated to accompany the Belgian to Bayern Munich.

The Clarets backed Manchester City’s former captain, who guided them to victory in 2022–2023, after they were dropped from the Premier League in their first attempt. But it looks like he’s going to move on to take charge at the Allianz Arena.

After Bayern missed out on some of their other contenders to replace Thomas Tuchel, things moved swiftly. The Bundesliga squad is reportedly getting close to appointing Kompany as their new manager.

Mike McGrath of The Telegraph reports that the 38-year-old is likely to bring his backroom staff to Bayern, adding that compensation has been discussed and an agreement is close.

That is understood, however, not to include Bellamy, who served as his assistant at Burnley and Anderlecht.

Rather, it is thought that the Welsh coach, who would be taking over as manager for the first time, may be a contender to succeed Kompany at Turf Moor.

The rationale behind Bayern’s insane Vincent Kompany

Although Bayern spent a lot of money in the last two transfer windows, they appointed a manager who was just demoted from the Premier League at the first time of asking, which may seem like a foolish move, but there is logic to their craziness.

The wide, possession-based style of play that Kompany brought to Burnley is one that works well at the highest level, as evidenced by the domination his team displayed during their 2022–23 Championship title-winning season. It can also be incredibly successful when top players are involved.

Bayern seems to think that his playing style will work well at the top of the Bundesliga and fit their team, and that his playing background and reputation should allow him to demand the respect he needs in the locker room in order to carry out his adjustments effectively.

Beyond the fact that Kompany’s team was relegated in what was undoubtedly a dismal season, it’s critical to dig deeper, and the German powerhouses are doing just that with this appointment. It’s a risk, for sure, but a calculated one.

Burnley supporters, who have stuck behind Kompany through thick and thin, would naturally feel a little cheated, but they should also realise that at this stage of his managerial career, a move to Bayern is unavoidable.

Craig Bellamy a risky replacement

Football continuity can be a beautiful thing, and Steven Schumacher and Plymouth Argyle are two examples of teams where selecting an assistant manager to take over for a manager has worked well.

However, there’s no denying that the Bellamy appointment would not be without risk. Despite having no prior head coaching experience, he would be taking on his first senior position and expected to succeed in winning a promotion in his first season.

It is possible that the Welshman will succeed and that Kompany has a great deal of faith in him, but given the situation, it is understandable that the Clarets would have looked elsewhere for an appointment that would be more certain.
