Mick Byrne, the new coach of the Fiji Water Flying Fijians, unveiled his 33-man team today in preparation for the June/July Test. After taking over as the new national coach, Byrne is excited about the team that was chosen, even though it was a challenging task to reduce the initial roster of 55 players to the final 33.
He claims that the players on the Flying Fijians team are eager to join and are a solid blend of Drua and foreign-based players. “I believe it’s challenging. It’s really challenging, in my opinion, to manage the caliber of players that Fiji has, especially for this national team. And there are a ton of amazing players competing all over the world. Always, the first one is the hardest. Athletes are leaving club football. While some players are playing every minute there, others aren’t playing as many. So, there is a variety of forms entering.
The team demonstrates the depth and breadth of the Flying Fijians with 20 players from the Drua and 13 from other clubs. According to Byrne, the team’s significant absences include veteran Levani Botia and stars Vinaya Habosi and Josua Tuisova, who had to miss practice because of personal obligations.
