Caitlin Clark vs. Angel Reese 2.0: Sky Seeking Retribution Against Fever

Sunday morning’s tip-off between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky is slated for 12:00 ET, marking their second meeting this season. Indiana prevailed 71-70 in the first meeting between the two teams, displaying a back-and-forth style of play. The thrilling narratives within, such the rivalry between Sky rookie power forward Angel Reese and Fever rookie guard Caitlin Clark, overshadowed the actual game.

These two have been rivals since their college days, when their teams faced off in the 2023 NCAA Tournament Championship game. Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes were defeated by Reese’s LSU Tigers in a game that was largely uncontested. The game’s most memorable moment, though, came when Reese slapped Clark with the “You can’t see me” hand signal at the conclusion, mirroring an incident from a previous game that season involving Clark. This gave rise to a variety of stories about the two, which fueled the rivalry’s continuation on the court. When they faced off again in the 2024 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight round, Clark’s Hawkeyes prevailed 94-87.

In addition, Sky guard Chennedy Carter made news during their first professional game when she fouled Clark hard enough to knock her to the ground. Carter took an unnecessary step, and she added to the drama by declining to comment on the situation when questioned after the game. It will be interesting to see how Carter and Clark respond to each other when they are lined up against each other going into this second game.

The WNBA has seen more publicity and viewership as a result of the rise in talent led by Clark and Reese. Due to their distinct personalities, both players became early favorites among fans while they were professionals. Reese has been a silent force for the Chicago Bulls, putting up 12.2 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.8 steals a game on average. Even though things haven’t gone well for the Sky, Reese has given them hope for the future.

Some players in the WNBA have expressed their disapproval of the attention she has gotten. Nevertheless, Clark persevered and gave the game her best effort. Her averages for each game are 15.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.4 steals. Despite all of the commotion, she has maintained her composure and just wants to play basketball.
