Managed by Erol Bulut, Cardiff were outplayed by one of the title favorites, with a series of critical errors contributing to their downfall. The match began disastrously for Cardiff when Evan Horvath’s own goal gave Burnley an early lead. A routine backpass slipped under Horvath’s foot, allowing the Clarets to take control. Dimitrios Goutas then failed to close down Jay Rodriguez, who delivered a cross for Luca Koleosho to double Burnley’s lead.

Josh Brownhill added a third goal shortly after the break, and Burnley completed the rout with stunning goals from Zeki Amdouni and Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

Burnley’s opening goal came just nine minutes in when Goutas’ innocuous backpass slipped under Horvath’s foot and trickled into the net despite his desperate attempt to clear it.

Despite the setback, Cardiff responded with determination and had their most threatening chances in the next 25 minutes. Yakou Meite came closest when he hit the post with a shot, and Wilfried Kanga thought he had scored his first goal for Cardiff, only to have it ruled out for offside.

Cardiff’s chances of turning the game around were dashed when Jay Rodriguez set up Koleosho for Burnley’s second goal after a quarter of an hour. Rodriguez skillfully evaded Goutas’ challenge and delivered a cross that Koleosho converted.

Chris Willock attempted to spark a Cardiff comeback with a shot five minutes after the break, but his effort failed to trouble Burnley’s goalkeeper, Vaclav Hladky. Instead, Burnley extended their lead as Brownhill scored after a quick counter-attack.

Burnley grew more dominant as the game progressed, with Brownhill and Dara O’Shea testing Cardiff from distance. Cardiff struggled to regain their footing, and Burnley sealed their victory with two late goals. Amdouni’s shot hit the underside of the crossbar, and Gudmundsson added a fifth goal in stoppage time to complete the rout.
