Carlos Corberan, the West Brom manager, will join Southampton.

Premier League new boys Southampton are reportedly among the clubs keeping tabs on West Brom boss Carlos Corberan’s availability amid interest from Leeds United.

Since his hiring in October 2022, Corberan has been well-liked at the Hawthorns. His team is poised to contend for the top spot in the Championship table this year, having guided the Baggies to fifth place the previous campaign. Albion has had an outstanding start to the new season, sitting atop the second division after setting the early pace with five victories and one draw in their first six games.

Football Insider recently disclosed that the Spaniard has a £2 million release clause in his contract in the event that Daniel Farke is freed of his duties, but new information regarding his possible future destination has now surfaced.

Southampton are monitoring Carlos Corberan

The Sunday Mirror, in their print edition on Sunday, September 22, page 72, reports that Corberan’s possession-based approach has the Saints keeping an eye on events and seem prepared to act quickly should Leeds make a bid. They assert that if Southampton’s early Premier League difficulties persist, current manager Russell Martin will come under closer examination. Their board’s obvious misgivings over a one-dimensional style of play suggest Corberan’s replacement in the St. Mary’s dugout may be imminent.

With managers still in place at both teams, it is unclear whether Leeds or Southampton will attempt to employ Corberan soon. However, it would be shocking to see him go the Hawthorns this early in the season, especially since a promotion challenge to a top-flight club is very plausible. In addition to the Saints’ interest, the Sunday Mirror also notes that Leicester City was considering hiring the 41-year-old in the summer but ultimately chose to select Steve Cooper.

Carlos Corberan is someone West Brom will want to keep at any costs.

Corberan is understandably set to be of interest to numerous different clubs that may look to change their manager in the coming months, but it does seem unlikely that he would depart the Hawthorns to join another Championship side, or even to a lower Premier League team.

The Baggies’ development and improvement since the Spaniard’s appointment has been very clear to see, and so they must make sure he stays in charge until at least the end of the season, with promotion very possible if their form continues in the same vein.

The 41-year-old has been a clear success in the West Midlands up to now, with a ninth-placed finish in his first campaign in charge after being appointed with the club in the relegation zone in October, then a fifth-placed finish last season as the Baggies were beaten in the play-off semi-final second-leg by the Saints.

His side’s ascent has only continued so far this season with an electric start that has seen them concede just twice in six league games and not lose a Championship outing as yet.
