Celtic have submitted a letter to the SFA seeking answers over Rangers’ contentious penalty – and have raised concerns over the VAR footage John Beaton studied.

Ref Beaton was called to the monitor after initially booking Fabio Silva for diving following a challenge from Alistair Johnston. But the whistler soon changed his mind, handing Gers an early second-half lifeline having trailed 2-0 at the break. James Tavernier perfectly dispatched from 12 yards out to spark an epic revival from the Ibrox side, as the Old Firm classic ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

However, the Daily Record reports that Celts are adamant the slowed-down VAR footage did not show the moment Johnston touched the ball with his outstretched leg before Silva went to ground. And now, the champions have written to Hampden bosses seeking clarification as to why the spotkick was given, believing Beaton wasn’t shown the full picture.

A club spokesperson said: “The club has been in correspondence with the Scottish FA regarding the VAR process throughout the season, and has also played an active part in the SPFL working group which is seeking to work with the Scottish FA to improve standards for all clubs. We have raised our further concerns regarding the VAR process in the match with the Scottish FA and await a response.”

Boss Brendan Rodgers accused Gers attacker Silva of diving to win the penalty, backing Beaton’s initial decision to book the Portuguese starlet for simulation.

He said: “If you watch it back I think the referee makes the right decision in the game. He’s obviously seen what we all see in the fact that our player Ali has actually made a good recovery challenge, he’s going one way and then he gets the ball and knocks it away. The player then simulates and goes over and I thought it was the right decision in the game.
