Celtic emerge as transfer suitors for £9m Burnley star Kompany described as ‘very important’

Brendan Rodgers has emphasized that he doesn’t want Celtic to become stagnant in their recruitment efforts. The manager expressed satisfaction with the work of his scouting team during the busy summer transfer window, which saw the arrivals of players such as Arne Engels, Adam Idah, and Alex Valle, among others. Additionally, Celtic have already shown early interest in signing Josh Brownhill from Burnley.

Burnley – 183 apps – 19 goals
Bristol City – 161 apps – 17 goals
Barnsley (loan) – 27 apps – 3 goals
Preston – 64 apps – 6 goals

Josh Brownhill has attracted interest from several clubs, including potential suitors from Italy and Saudi Arabia, with the expectation that other teams may offer significant financial packages. The combative midfielder can sign a pre-contract in January, as his deal with Burnley expires in the summer of 2025. This could present great value for Celtic, as Brownhill has made over 180 appearances for Burnley since joining for £9 million in 2020. Prior to that, he was a key player for Bristol City, featuring in more than 150 games.

Brownhill joined Burnley under Sean Dyche and became an important player, further solidifying his status under Vincent Kompany. Kompany ensured Brownhill’s contract was extended by a year before his move to Bayern Munich, highlighting his importance to Burnley prior to their relegation. In May 2024, Kompany stated: “We have a player here who has been very important for us, so rumors… we’re used to rumors.”

In addition to Brownhill, Celtic are also monitoring Airdrieonians twins Dylan and Cole Williams, with potential interest from the club in the upcoming January window. Meanwhile, Lennon Miller continues to be linked with Celtic, with pundit Mark Guidi confirming “100 percent” of interest from the Hoops.
