Celtic are reportedly interested in signing Ireland Internationalist Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn Rovers. The Scottish Champions are cited as having an interest in the former Peterborough talent along with Premier League sides Fulham and Luton Town.
According to The Sun, Brendan Rodgers is interested in bringing the prolific attacking midfielder to Paradise ahead of next season. At 28, Szmodics will likely fancy a step up in some regard whether that be to sample the Premier League or to compete for trophies and play in Europe for Celtic.
Szmodics has enjoyed a phenomenal season for Blackburn, scoring 23 goals in the Championship as well as chiming in with 4 assists along with six goals in the FA Cup. The attacking midfielder has a deal until 2026 but the Ewood Park side are suffering from financial strife, meaning that they may be forced to sell the 28-year-old.
It would certainly be an interesting move for Celtic to make with the quality and goalscoring threat clear to see from Szmodics. It would also make sense that the club were making contingency plans for a new attacking midfielder with Matt O’Riley expected to be the subject of significant transfer interest in the summer.
Celtic will consider making Szmodics’ Irish teammate Adam Idah’s stay in Glasgow permanent over the next few weeks. The big striker joined on a loan deal until the end of the season but there was no option to buy, meaning that the club will need to negotiate with The Canaries should they want to sign the 23-year-old on a permanent basis.
The focus for Brendan Rodgers and his team over the next few weeks will be to get six wins on the bounce in the league to retain the Premiership trophy.
