Celtic legend expected to return for £25 million as the son of a previous Hoops great moves to Europe

The Celtic playmaker is said to be favouring a move to the English Premier League after being targeted by clubs across Europe this summer

According to speculations, Matt O’Riley would be “happy” to work with one of his previous bosses this summer, therefore Celtic will have to fight to hold onto one of their most valuable assets. This summer, O’Riley has drawn a lot of attention from teams vying for the signature of the Danish international midfielder. Atletico Madrid, Southampton, Atalanta, and Brighton have all been linked to the player. The Celtics have previously reportedly rejected a bid of £14.3 million from Europa League winners Atalanta, who are holding out for a sum closer to £25 million.

After O’Riley shone in the team’s 4-0 victory over Kilmarnock in their Scottish Premiership opening over the weekend, head coach Rodgers is adamant that the 23-year-old is still a key component of his plans, and the club is prepared to fight for their desired transfer fee. It is now thought that O’Riley would prefer to rejoin his old manager Russell Martin at Southampton, a newcomer to the English Premier League, in summer.

O’Riley’s preferred destination, if a bid were to be accepted, is reportedly St Mary’s. Yesterday, reports suggested that rival Premier League team Brighton was expected to shatter the Scottish transfer record for O’Riley. After the 38-year-old brought the midfielder to Stadium MK on a free transfer in 2021, the midfielder previously collaborated with Saints manager Martin at MK Dons. According to Blackmore, “Saints would like both (O’Riley and Fabio Carvalho), and I think maybe Brighton is interested in O’Riley.” He said to BBC Radio Solent, “I think O’Riley is happy to come to Saints and I think Celtic need to get on with it.”

Sydney, the former Celtic striker Pierre van Hooijdonk’s son, is expected to move this summer after it was reported by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano that the Dutch attacker is leaving Bologna. Before ending a loan at Norwich City, where he made nine appearances without scoring, the 24-year-old was briefly linked to the Hoops in January. After a goal-filled season with Eredivisie team Heerenveen in 22–23, the player had a dry spell, but this summer he is expected to start over. Sydney van Hooijdonk signs a two-year contract with Cesena after leaving Bologna on a permanent transfer. Romano wrote, “Free move with performance-related add-ons and sell-on clause included.”
