Centre-backs hand Sheffield Wednesday boost ahead of huge Championship game against West Bromwich Albion

Despite suffering a fractured nose, Bambo Diaby appears to be ready to participate in Sheffield Wednesday’s season-ending home game given the good news about their center-backs’ fitness.

The Owls defeated Blackburn Rovers 3-1 on Sunday to move out of the relegation zone for the first time since the Championship table this season has any significance. However, in the second half of the game, Diaby sustained an injury.

Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City play on Saturday. A win would prevent the losers from surpassing the Owls, although they will want to beat West Bromwich Albion at home to ease their final-day assignment against Sunderland.

On Thursday, Diaby and the healthy-again Di’Shon Bernard exercised while wearing protective masks. On Wednesday, Michael Ihiekwe, the player Diaby replaced at Ewood Park, was on the Middlewood Road pitches.

IN TRAINING: Sheffield Wednesday expect centre-back Bambo Diaby (left) to be able to play in a mask

On Thursday, Rohl said, “Bambo trained today with us; he was in a mask.” Icky (Ihiekwe) rested today after training in several areas yesterday. This week, Dish was fully trained, which is excellent.

When asked if this indicated Diaby would be fit for West Brom’s play-off-chasing match on Saturday at home, Rohl responded, “I hope so. He trained yesterday with full intensity and then made the entire training with no reaction.” He trained today, and if he continues to train well tomorrow, I don’t see any issues.

After both teams sold out of seats, their safety advisory group released an additional 1,250 tickets in the bottom deck of the West Stand, meaning Wednesday will undoubtedly have extra support off the pitch.

A major boost to his reputation has come from Rohl’s hinting at the off-field adjustments required to retain him in management over his first season.

“With our enormous fan base, I see a lot of potential,” he remarked. At Blackburn, we had 7,000 fans who gave us a tremendous amount of energy. But as I’ve mentioned previously, there are certain things we need to get right in the summer.

“Using this (supporter) power alone is absurd; we require more power and guidance. It concerns the team, the surroundings, the facilities, and everything else. It would be fantastic if we could take the first step this summer.”
