Charlton Athletic Plot Move For Championship Forward - The Deck

Football Insider reporter Pete O’Rourke claims that Charlton Athletic is preparing to sign Sheffield Wednesday forward Mallik Wilks this summer.

The 25-year-old has played in the Championship for practically his whole career, but after seeing his playing time decline in the 2023–2024 season, League One has expressed significant interest in signing him.

How did last season’s Wilks fare?

Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship safety last season, Wilks missed a significant portion of the season playing for Danny Rohl’s team.

Wilks was only able to make 15 league games for the team overall, along with three FA Cup appearances. But the winger’s lone goal came in a 4-0 victory over Cardiff City in the cup.

After joining from Hull City, Wilks played in 24 games the previous season and contributed to the team’s promotion back to the Championship.

Would Charlton be better off acquiring Wilks?

Wilks missed a significant portion of the 2023–24 season due to a combination of injuries and tactical choices, but his promotion-winning background would benefit the team.

Wilks is also adaptable, having played in the middle and on both flanks throughout his career, which will help Charlton’s attacking options coming into the forthcoming League One season.

Which other groups would be keen to participate?

The unfortunate news for Charlton supporters is that Wilks’ permanent transfer is not the only team vying for his services this summer.

Pete O’Rourke claims that Stockport County and Reading are both interested in signing the winger, which might start a bidding battle.

Although Wilks is under contract, there probably will be a charge that needs to be paid. No cost or asking price has been revealed thus far. But O’Rourke has also hinted that Wilks would consider a loan move since he wants to play regularly in the first squad come season.
