Chris Sutton has responded to Celtic’s decision to approach the SFA over the controversial VAR decision that saw Rangers awarded a penalty on Sunday.
Sutton simply tweeted “interesting” in reaction to the news that Celtic had filed a formal query regarding the penalty awarded to Rangers in the heated Glasgow Derby
Celtic’s contention centres around the penalty given after VAR intervention, which they argue was based on incomplete footage shown to referee John Beaton. The club insists that the footage omitted crucial moments where Alistair Johnston made initial contact with the ball before Fabio Silva of Rangers went down in the box. This missing context, Celtic argues, is pivotal as it supports the referee’s initial decision to book Silva for simulation rather than award a penalty.
The club is also challenging the application of IFAB’s rules in this instance, arguing that Johnston’s tackle, while making contact with the ball first, did not warrant a penalty as it was neither careless, reckless, nor excessively forceful.
The club are waiting on a response from the SFA.
