Colchester United legends set to roll back the years in charity fundraiser

Colchester United legends to feature in charity match | Gazette

This weekend’s charity football game promises to bring back the good old days for LAYER Road heroes.

Saturday at Stanway Rovers FC, there will be a special Hope for Grace Cup charity match. The game starts at 2 p.m., and former Colchester United captain Karl Duguid will captain a team full of the team’s previous favourites.

Greg Halford, Kem Izzet, Jamie Cureton, John White, Dean Morgan, Craig Fagan, Michael Brothers, and Kevin Watson are among the players that will be playing alongside Duguid at the Hawthorns.

The crew will be led by Matt Calmus, a devoted Colchester supporter.

At the event, which is being held in support of six-year-old Grace Beverton, who suffers from a rare genetic condition, they will represent Hope for Grace FC.

“We love to do the charity games for Grace,” Duguid declared.

It’s getting a little bit difficult because their team appears to be getting younger every year!

It’s a charity that we all currently support.

“I’ve grown close to Grace’s father, Dale, and the family; there are some wonderful people in this.”

“It’s been a really good journey with the football club to end with this and I’m looking forward to this one.”

Only 80 people worldwide, including Grace, have the condition known by scientists as RHOBTB2, which resulted in potentially fatal convulsions for Grace when she was just five months old.

All money made on the day will benefit Hope for Grace. Tickets are priced at £5 for adults and £2 for children.

Fans of the team can purchase programmes including autographs from the club’s legends.

All child admission tickets purchased for Football Fun Day will be good for a free session that runs from 12:30 to 1 pm.

On the day, there will also be a raffle, face painting, and inflatables.

Following the game, there will be an auction of the U’s legends kits at the clubhouse.

Peverel Green Care Homes, Haste Property Finance, and LJ Rose Accounting are the sponsors of the Hope for Grace charity cup.
