Heracles of the Netherlands has released winger Emil Hansson to Birmingham City. The fourth player the Blues have signed during the summer transfer window is Swedish winger Hansson, who has agreed to a three-year deal.

After Hansson’s outstanding Eredivisie season, Blues and Heracles apparently reached an agreement earlier this week for roughly £1.5 million to move Hansson to England. Prior to sustaining a calf injury that ended his season in March, Hansson had participated in 24 games with five goals and six assists.

Hansson had only spent two complete seasons in the Dutch top division, having been a key player in Heracles’ 2022–2023 promotion. Heracles won the Eerste Divisie, and Hansson is credited with 16 goals and 19 assists in 36 games.

The 26-year-old has experience playing internationally, having made ten appearances and scored four goals for Sweden’s under-21 squad. Before representing Sweden, Hansson competed for his native Norway at the under-16 and under-19 levels.

Hansson is the son of Patrik Hansson, a current coach and former professional. Tommy Svensson, the brother of his grandpa, was a player and manager for Sweden’s senior team.

During this transfer window, the Blues have already signed Alfie May, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, and Ryan Allsop to their roster. Before the deal fell through, they were on the verge of signing Dutch defender Mike Eerdhuijzen, so they expanded their search for new hires.

In order to provide manager Chris Davies with a team that can win promotion, the club is employing analytics to guide their decisions. Hansson, who can play through the middle or on either flank, will increase Davies’ forward options.
