Confirms Stoke City and Huddersfield Town will miss target

Stoke City and Huddersfield Town have both suffered a blow in the summer transfer window

Jay Rodriguez, a target for Stoke City and Huddersfield Town, has a contract extension announced by Burnley.

Rodriguez’s contract was slated to expire next month, so his time with the Clarets might be coming to an end.

If the forward became a free agent this summer, he was linked to a transfer to either Stoke or Huddersfield.

The Lancashire team, however, has revealed that the striker has signed a fresh one-year contract committing to Turf Moor through the summer of 2025.

In the team’s last-day match against Nottingham Forest earlier this month, Rodriguez made his 250th league game for Burnley, where he returned for a second tenure in 2019.

Jay Rodriguez opens up on Burnley contract extension

After the Championship team was relegated back to the second division, Rodriguez gave an open discussion about his decision to accept a new contract with them.

He expressed his happiness at being able to represent his boyhood club for at least another year, saying that it was a straightforward choice to make.

According to Rodriguez, representing his hometown team, Burnley, is a wonderful experience and an incredible honour. This was said on the official Burnley website.

It was a gratifying moment for me to be offered another year, and I couldn’t refuse it.

For my family, friends, and myself, it was an obvious choice, and my only thought was to sign and continue to play for this club for as long as possible.

Being from the town, Burnley is all I’ve ever known.

“No matter what I do, the football club will always play a significant role in my life since it is a huge part of the town and being able to represent Burnley is always special.”

According to Fbref’s statistics, Rodriguez made 21 Premier League games last season, including seven starts, and contributed one assist and two goals.

The dismal Premier League season for Burnley

Under Vincent Kompany, Burnley won the Championship title and was promoted a year ago.

The Clarets, who finished 19th in the standings, were unable to stay in the top level for more than a year.

Burnley has officially announced that Kompany  will be leaving the team after their relegation, with the Belgian being appointed by Bayern Munich.

The 38-year-old may now join the German powerhouses after the two sides reached a €12 (£10.2) million deal.

Rodriguez staying at Burnley makes sense

Rodriguez is still an important player in the team’s locker room even though he hasn’t played as much as he once did in recent seasons.

The forward is an incredible asset to the club since he is a leader that the younger players can look up to and because of his extensive experience playing at the highest level.

Having come through the academy system, the 34-year-old is well-liked by the supporters and has a deep understanding of the organization—just the kind of relationship a team needs.

It makes sense to keep him on staff even though he might not play much, and the 2022–2023 promotion campaign showed that he still has a lot to offer at this level.
