Cooper: We turned over the ball too much

Yeovil suffered a 3-1 defeat at Huish Park in their final pre-season match against Exeter City, a League One team. Sonny Cox capitalized on an early opportunity to give Exeter a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the game, setting the tone for the rest of the evening. Mark Cooper, speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel, acknowledged the challenging nature of the match, stating they had a strong start but conceded a “horrendous goal” that shifted momentum against them.

Reflecting on the game, Cooper emphasized the importance of facing tough opponents like Exeter to prepare for the season ahead, despite the loss not being ideal. He highlighted issues with turnovers and maintaining possession, noting that such mistakes are costly, especially against higher-tier teams. Yeovil improved in the second half, with Frank Nouble scoring a goal after an Exeter defensive error and Dylan Morgan missing a penalty. However, Cooper attributed some of their success to Exeter making substitutions that allowed Yeovil to close the gap temporarily.

Overall, despite the loss, Cooper emphasized the importance of fitness and preparation as they continue to build towards the upcoming season.

On the bench for Yeovil were youth players Cody Koerner and Krystian Woods, along with a new trialist playing on the left side of defense, believed to be Brandon Haunstrup. Jacob Roddy, who had been involved in the team’s first three pre-season matches, was notably absent.

Manager Mark Cooper acknowledged that he still considers the squad to be somewhat understaffed, stating, “We’re a couple of players short. We know that and we’re looking and seeing who’s available, who can we attract when we get to a position where we can move to bring somebody in.”

Regarding the academy players, Cooper emphasized the importance of nurturing young talent: “It’s important that we keep trying to push the young boys. We’re trying to get that sort of connection with the Academy that if they are good enough, there’s a realistic pathway for them and we put another couple on tonight.”

Looking ahead, Yeovil’s upcoming matches include trips to Farnborough, Buckland Athletic, and Weston-super-Mare, with Cooper identifying the National League South opponents as providing more meaningful tests to gauge the team’s readiness ahead of their National League campaign beginning on August 10th.
