As a backup to Anthony Patterson, Sunderland is in talks to recruit Simon Moore, the goalkeeper for Coventry City. Journalist Alan Nixon reported as much, offering an update on the Black Cats’ pursuit of fresh signings. The Wearside team’s top priority at the moment will be selecting a new permanent head coach, as they haven’t had one since Michael Beale was fired in February.
There is growing pressure on the club to choose someone after several connections with other possible candidates to take over at the Stadium of Light have collapsed. However, in terms of player acquisition, it appears that the Black Cats are currently proceeding with their summer transfer plans as well.
Sunderland working on deal for Coventry City goalkeeper Simon Moore
According to this most recent update, Sunderland is now in talks to sign Moore, and the summer transfer market is currently open. The 34-year-old is believed to be moving to The Stadium of Light in order to cover for Patterson, who has just cemented himself as the number one player. After his contract expired at the end of the 2023–2024 season, Coventry confirmed that Moore was released, making him a free agent this summer.
The goalkeeper became a regular during his first season with the Sky Blues after joining in the summer of 2021, but he has struggled to get playing time in the last two seasons.
Moore might be Sunderland’s first senior signing of the summer transfer season if a deal is finalized; the team hasn’t entered the market yet because they are concentrating on finding a manager. Six points clear of the relegation zone at the end of the 2023–24 season, the Black Cats concluded their tenure in the Championship as 16th place finishers. Coventry, on the other hand, finished the season nine points outside of the play-off spots in ninth place in the second-tier standings.
Simon Moore could be a sensible signing for Sunderland
If they are successful, it seems like Sunderland made the right decision in signing Moore. The 34-year-old has a ton of experience in League One and the Championship, where he has always been a reliable choice in goal. As a result, Moore might be a dependable backup for Patterson and, given his experience, a valuable mentor for the younger first-choice quarterback for the Black Cats.
In fact, Sunderland might be able to look into loan agreements for players like Nathan Bishop or Alex Bass, who would benefit from the increased playing time that such a move would bring, thanks to Moore’s additional goalkeeping depth. Since he is expected to have a modest role on the field, it makes sense to target him while he is available for free, freeing up finances for possibly more significant additions.
This may also be a fairly safe signing to make ahead of any possible appointment, given that he will probably have a restricted role and won’t affect the plans of any new manager. In light of all of that, if Sunderland can successfully complete the transaction, it appears that signing Moore may be a wise move.
