William Simoneit, catcher, was acquired by the Cubs from the Phillies, according MLB.com’s transaction tracker. For the time being, the backstop is with Double-A Tennessee. Since he was not included in Philadelphia’s 40-man roster, he will not need a Cubs roster slot. In exchange, the Phils receive monetary considerations. The 27-year-old Simeonit joined the Athletics in 2020 as an undrafted free agent. He appeared in 244 minor league games between 2021 and 2023, ranging from High-A to Triple-A. In that span, he compiled a batting line of.259/.359/.408 combined, good for a 108 wRC+.
He was selected by the Phils in the 2023 Rule 5 minor league draft, displacing the A’s. Since the organizational change, he has struggled to produce consistent results. This season, he is hitting.145/.286/.306 across Double-A and Triple-A, striking out in 39% of his at-bats. After J.T. Realmuto needed knee surgery, the Phillies lost some depth at the position of catcher, but they still decided they would rather have the money than Simoneit.
This season, the Cubs have gotten virtually little from their catching position; manager Craig Counsell recently addressed this topic. As of right now, Yan Gomes’s season line is.154/.179/.242, while Miguel Amaya’s is.185/.248/.267. There isn’t another catcher on the club’s 40-man roster, thus neither of those two can be optioned. Although Alí Sánchez is already in the system as a non-roster depth player, Simoneit will now also serve in that role. Simoneit has undoubtedly had a difficult start to the year, but maybe he can return to his pre-2024 form.
