The reunion between Pete Shuttleworth and Wayne Rooney at Plymouth Argyle is not shocking to Alex Dicken, senior football writer for Birmingham Live.
After serving as a vital member of Rooney’s backroom team for three months at Birmingham City in the previous season, Shuttleworth has returned to Home Park in the role of deputy head coach. Dicken stated that Shuttleworth is ‘fiercely devoted’ to the new Pilgrims manager and suggested that the 49-year-old may be Rooney’s’most trusted ally in football’.

In 2015, Shuttleworth made his debut for Birmingham as a scout before rising to the position of head of tactical analysis, where he oversaw the team’s video analysis and game reports before to games. In 2020, he started working with Rooney at Derby County as an assistant coach and analyst for the first squad.

According to Dicken’s statement to Plymouth Live, Shuttleworth’s initial position at the Blues was as an analyst. However, he had always intended to become a professional club coach, and Wayne Rooney provided him with the chance to do so at Derby County.

“During their time together at Pride Park, Shuttleworth developed a close relationship with Rooney, and he accompanied him to DC United, the Blues, and now Plymouth. The most crucial thing to remember about Shuttleworth is that he is incredibly devoted to Rooney and might be the most reliable football ally of the Plymouth manager. You got the impression from talking with Shuttleworth that he views Rooney as his mentor for his coaching career.”Dicken continued: “Shuttleworth was kept around by Tony Mowbray after Rooney’s departure from Blues in January and utilised for his analytic skills, but Gary Rowett – who filled in for Mowbray in the final weeks of last season – redeployed him.
