“The players are the first to notice when we fall short of the high standards we should be meeting. Players can only be given so many chances, and if they don’t reach that level of consistency, it might be time for them to move on.
“Every day and every minute of their life should be held to standards. “Reach your ceiling,” I tell my guys, who are professional football players.
Over the years, I’ve managed a number of players that speak the talk but don’t act on it. Together with me, they will go by the wayside.
“You must perform to the levels I demand, whether you’re playing against Port Vale, a League Two team, or a trophy game.
“In three months of competitive games I’ve seen a lot of games, a lot of under-21 games, and I’m analysing all the time what I think we need and having conversations with the board and Mladen (Sormaz, the sporting director), my boss, to make sure we keep strengthening and move on the dead wood when we need to.”
Adam Phillips, Barnsley’s early-season standout player, is attempting to return from an ankle injury.
“Adam Phillips is back in full training, Sam (Cosgrove)’s getting there,” stated Clarke. “We’ll see how it goes with Adam but it’s promising.”
Jackson Smith returned with a “slight strain” after his loan at Grimsby Town.
