“Really refreshing” – Claim made about Chris Davies technique at Birmingham City
This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, offering personal insights from FLW Fan Pundits on the latest news, teams, players, managers, and potential transfers.
Birmingham City are targeting an immediate return to the Championship this season. Over the summer, they appointed Chris Davies, a former Tottenham Hotspur coach, to lead the charge for a top-two finish in League One.
So far, the campaign has started positively, with the Blues firmly in contention for promotion. Having previously worked under esteemed managers like Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers, Davies has brought an attacking, forward-thinking philosophy to St. Andrew’s, which has delivered encouraging results.
Birmingham style of play verdict
When asked about the style of play Davies has brought to the club, FLW’s Birmingham fan pundit Mike Gibbs praised his attacking approach.
He believes it is a breath of fresh air to see the team on the front foot so much after so many previous managers utilising a more defensive approach.
“I absolutely love the playing style that the manager’s employing at the moment,” Gibbs told Football League World.
“I think it’s the first time in a long time that we’ve had a manager who brought possession-based, attacking, pressing football, which is just great to see.
“As Birmingham fans, we’ve had decades really of pretty dross football, low possession, yes at times counter-attacking, but really being dominated by other teams.
“Which, from a morale perspective, isn’t particularly great, and isn’t particularly great to watch.
“So the fact that we’re taking games into our own hands instead of hoping the opposition fails is really refreshing to see.
“I think, if we’re being really picky, we just want to see the rewards a bit more of that possession-based style.
“I really do believe we’re not far away from giving a team in the league a bit of a hiding, so really happy with [the style of play].”
Birmingham City league position
League One standings 2024-25 (As of November 15th) | ||||
Team | P | GD | Pts | |
1 | Wycombe Wanderers | 14 | +16 | 32 |
2 | Birmingham City | 13 | +12 | 30 |
3 | Wrexham | 14 | +12 | 28 |
4 | Barnsley | 14 | +5 | 25 |
5 | Lincoln City | 14 | +4 | 25 |
6 | Stockport County | 15 | +8 | 24 |
Birmingham are currently second in the League One table, albeit with a game in hand on leaders Wycombe Wanderers.
The gap to top spot is just two points, with the Blues currently not in action due to the November international break.
Draws against Northampton Town and Mansfield Town in recent weeks have seen them fall off first place, with third place Wrexham also now only two points behind.
Next up for Davies’ side is a trip to face Shrewsbury Town on 23 November.
Davies has made a strong start at Birmingham, handling the pressure well in his first managerial role. With the club aiming for a swift return to the Championship, expectations were heightened by significant summer spending. However, the 39-year-old has impressed, gaining the support of the fans. While Birmingham now sit in second place, they remain strong contenders for automatic promotion this season.
