Celtic need to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window and they have earmarked Koen Casteels as a potential option.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, the Bhoys have added the Belgium international goalkeeper to their list of targets to replace Joe Hart, who will retire at the end of the season.
Hart has been influential for the Hoops over the years and will play his final professional game against Rangers this Saturday at Hampden Park in the Scottish Cup final.
Casteels has emerged as an option for Celtic, despite holding talks with Anderlecht. He is currently a free agent and has confirmed that he has held “initial talks” with clubs over his future move.
Celtic need an experienced goalkeeper
Hart has been sensational for Celtic, and Brendan Rodgers needs to find an able replacement. Celtic will probably look for someone with loads of experience, and Rodgers could bring someone with Premier League experience as well, although that may not be the sole criterion.
According to a recent report, the Bhoys are showing keen interest in signing Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy who will soon become a free agent. While Celtic can offer him regular game time, he could be attracted to join bigger clubs like Newcastle and Liverpool.
Casteels is a vastly experienced goalkeeper who has made eight appearances for the Belgium national team. The 31-year-old has spent most of his career in Germany where he represented clubs such as Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg.
For Wolfsburg, he has made 270 appearances, spanning over nine years. After the home defeat to Mainz on Saturday, he waved an emotional farewell to the fans and will look for new pastures.
Celtic can offer him Champions League football, and it might tempt him to join them rather than Anderlecht. Apart from these two, the Hoops have been linked with goalkeepers such as Etienne Vaessen of Waalwijk, Burnley’s Arijanet Muric, QPR’s Asmir Begovic and Turkish international Ugurcan Cakir of Trabzonspor.
