It has been reported that the Marc Guehi transfer to Newcastle United is finally nearing completion. With the transfer window set to close in just eight days, shutting at 11 pm on Friday, August 30, The Telegraph’s journalist Mike McGrath provides the latest update. He notes that there is now only a £5 million gap between what Newcastle United have
offered and what Crystal Palace is asking for.The report indicates that Crystal Palace values Guehi at £70 million, while Newcastle United has raised their offer to £60 million plus an additional £5 million in future add-ons.
The man from The Telegraph saying that now there is real hope that this Marc Guehi move will finally happen, before that 11pm deadline in eight days time.
Personally, I think Newcastle United have been used by Crystal Palace in recent weeks to deflect from other things that are happening at the club.
Palace have made a few modest signings, spending only around £25 million, while also losing the talented Michael Olise for a reported £60 million. Now, with Joachim Andersen securing his desired move to Fulham, the situation has further deteriorated. A disappointing opening day defeat to Brentford hasn’t lifted the spirits of Palace fans either.
Meanwhile, American businessman John Textor is reportedly looking to offload his stake in Crystal Palace as he pursues a takeover of Everton. Textor, who leads the multi-club Eagle Football Holdings, holds around 45% of Crystal Palace, making him the largest shareholder at Selhurst Park.
The swift agreement to sell star player Marc Guehi to Newcastle United likely hasn’t improved the mood among Palace supporters. It seems that no matter what Newcastle United offered, Crystal Palace would have likely held off until late in the transfer window to finalize the deal, in an attempt to mitigate the backlash over selling the England defender.
Marc Guehi is clearly eager to leave Crystal Palace, as he has repeatedly refused to sign a contract extension and now has just 22 months remaining on his current deal.
It’s evident that Guehi is interested in joining Newcastle United, as their pursuit of him has continued for some time, which wouldn’t be the case if the center-back wasn’t open to the move.
Despite Chairman Steve Parish’s public stance that Palace doesn’t need to sell, the reality is that they likely have to offload Guehi during this transfer window. Otherwise, they risk facing a difficult situation where their star player and biggest asset enters the final stages of his contract, potentially leaving for nothing if the situation isn’t resolved.
Additionally, the media often overlooks that when Palace purchased Guehi from Chelsea three years ago, a clause in the deal entitles Chelsea to a significant portion of any transfer fee Palace receives. This is another reason why Palace is determined to get the maximum possible fee from Newcastle.
Given how long this situation has dragged on and the lack of serious competition from other clubs, it would be surprising if Guehi is still at Selhurst Park come September. All signs point to Newcastle United as his likely destination.
