Carl Rushworth and Nathan Wood could be vital to Swansea’s transfer window.

With several players expected to leave Swansea City in the upcoming hectic transfer window, manager Luke Williams will need to handle business wisely in his first summer in the role.

Swansea’s season in the 2023–24 EFL Championship has been forgettable. Since their Premier League relegation, the club’s 14th-place result is their second-worst result in the second division.

Before the season began, Russell Martin left to coach Southampton at the Swansea.com Stadium, leaving former Barnsley manager Michael Duff in charge. After just five months in South Wales, Duff was fired in December, just five points above the relegation zone, despite his meagre record of 21 points from 19 games.

The club eventually regained some stability with the appointment of Williams from Notts County, since many supporters felt that Duff’s style of play deviated from the team’s possession-based strategy, or the “Swansea way.”

After completing a successful deal this winter with the acquisition of the talented Brazilian winger Ronald, Williams will be preparing for his second transfer window at the team.

Last summer, Swansea had a mixed summer transfer window. Jamal Lowe and Carl Rushworth were clearly successful loan additions, but full-backs Josh Key and Josh Tymon were a permanent addition.

But the Swans lost their leading scorer from the previous two seasons, Joël Piroe, to Leeds United, and their new additions, Mykola Kukharevych and Jerry Yates, were unable to match the Dutchman’s effect.

To make matters worse, Morgan Whittaker, who finished as the league’s equal third-highest striker this season, was sold by the club to Plymouth Argyle for a meagre £1 million, according to the BBC.

The club may face significant changes this summer, as multiple departures are expected. Five other players, including club icons Joe Allen and Kyle Naughton, have contracts that expire before the window opens, while six players—including Rushworth and Charlie Patino—will return to their original clubs following their loans.

Williams needs to make the correct signings. These two additions have the potential to spark a massive transfer window in South Wales.

Swansea must secure another loan deal for Carl Rushworth

Rushworth was among Swansea’s greatest acquisitions in the 2023–2024 season. He won the Player’s Player of the Season and the Supporters Player of the Season honours at the club’s awards ceremony.

Only four goalkeepers in the Championship played every minute of the season for his team, including the 22-year-old, who put up some excellent stats during that time. The second-highest custodian in the league, FBREF has avoided 5.5 goals, based on the post-shot predicted goals minus goals allowed statistic.

Appearances 46
Save Percentage 70.9
Goals Prevented 5.5
Goals Conceded 65

The only custodian in the Swansea team with experience at this level will be Andy Fisher if they are unable to re-sign their star player on loan from Brighton. In January 2022, Martin signed Fisher as a first-choice option; however, he lost his spot due to a run of unsatisfactory games, and he is most definitely not a trustworthy option in goal for the upcoming campaign.

Williams is optimistic that the goalie will extend his contract for an additional year.He continued: “I think he is going to be with us next season of course, but after that he is going to go on and be a top Premier League keeper I am sure because of the quality he has but also the personality he has to go with it.”

Nathan Wood could bring in a high profit for Swansea

Nathan Wood is another one of the team’s top players. Last season, he made 26 appearances and was named to the league’s team of the week twice.

The centre back signed a two-year contract with Swansea in July 2022 after leaving Middlesbrough for an undisclosed £400,000 price, as reported by the BBC. At the beginning of April, the team did, however, exercise an option to extend his contract through the end of the next season.

Williams thought that Wood might be sold this summer even with the contract extension.”We love him to pieces, so we’re not going to advertise that there’s a sale going on, come get him for half price. He’s an unbelievable player,” he stated.

“But given the circumstances, it seems likely that [a transfer] will take place.”

The Swans will be hurt by the transfer of such a talented and high-potential youngster, but they do have Ben Cabango, a Wales international, and Harry Darling to cover for him at centre back.

According to MailOnline, there have already been several proposals exceeding £10 million for the Southampton star from last season, who is expected to fetch a big transfer cost.

In light of the seemingly active transfer window in South Wales, the funds obtained from the possible sale of Wood might be allocated to many acquisitions in strategic positions to bolster the team’s strength as a whole.

Swansea needs to add players this summer, and selling a player like Wood will make it easier to do so. Even though his departure will be felt by the team, he may help build a more formidable group that is prepared to compete in the 2024–2025 Championship Season.
