Derby County path clear to sign former Liverpool midfielder after major Barnsley update

Herbie Kane (right) has been linked with a move to Derby.

Days after he was rumoured to be moving to Derby County, Herbie Kane was let go by Barnsley. The five players who were released were Jordan Williams, Robbie Cundy, Nicky Cadden, Devante Cole, and the former midfielder for Liverpool.

Kane scored nine goals from midfield and assisted on five more, playing a crucial part in the Tykes’ run to the playoffs.

The 25-year-old had expressed his goal to be promoted this season, and his departure from the team is now certain after losing to Bolton in the play-offs.This summer, Derby plans to make changes to their midfield, especially with Max Bird leaving for Bristol City.

Given that Cole, 29, ended League One as the Tykes’ leading scorer with 18 goals, his exit from Oakwell is also not surprising. It’s likely that he will also have other offers on the table.

“All five of the senior players leaving at the end of their contracts have served the club with distinction and can leave Oakwell knowing they made a difference on and off the pitch,” said Mladen Sormaz, Barnsley’s sports director, in a statement confirming their departures.

“Robbie gave the shirt his all when given the chance, Nicky played a key role in a few important moments, Herbie frequently had the Oakwell crowd on their feet, and Devante scored some important goals for the Reds.” Jordan deserves special recognition because, although he has been a fantastic player, he has truly shined as a captain and leader. We hope they have a bright future, and they are always welcome to return to Oakwell.

“We are working hard to bring in some new faces who can help us achieve our goals next season and beyond,” I want to reassure the fans.
