Shooting at Eastern Market leaves 2 dead after Lions game
“Tailgating, drinking and guns — they don’t mix,” Detroit Police Chief James White told reporters on Sunday.
DETROIT (AP) — A second victim has died following a shooting at a tailgate event in Eastern Market after Sunday’s Detroit Lions game, police confirmed on Monday.
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m., shortly after the Lions’ 20-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Ford Field. Detroit Police Chief James White explained that a fight broke out at the popular open-air gathering spot, escalating when one person pulled out a gun and fired at least two shots.
Officers nearby quickly responded, apprehended the suspect, and recovered two firearms. “Tailgating, drinking, and guns — they don’t mix,” White emphasized during Sunday’s press briefing.
The victims, both Detroit residents, were identified as a man in his 40s and another in his 20s. The suspect, a man from Oak Park, is currently in custody. White added that the altercation initially involved a larger group, but resumed a short distance away, where the fatal shots were fired.
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed his sorrow, saying, “Anytime that somebody loses their life, that’s a tragic thing.”
