In addition to getting ready for life in the Premier League again, Southampton is keeping an eye on the future by trying to sign a highly sought-after young player.

Southampton gets set for their comeback to the top flight.

Russell Martin is assembling a team that he hopes can avoid relegation the following season, even as the Saints are constantly searching for the next big thing.

Bobby Decordova-Reid of Fulham, a Jamaican international who is expected to turn down a new contract at his current team, has been linked to a move to the South Coast. A flexible player, Decordova-Reid can play in attacking and central midfield in addition to the right side.

Danny Ings will be joining the Fulham player on the Saints’ wish list. With 100 games played and 46 goals scored during his time with Southampton, the current West Ham player has a wealth of Southampton history. Southampton may once more be considering their former player as a potential new addition, as former player Adam Lallana returned to the team earlier this month.

Flynn Downes is another name Martin is fervently trying to revive at St Mary’s. The manager of Southampton, where the midfielder played on loan last season, is allegedly keen to finalise a move before the start of preseason next month.

While the Saints’ recruitment department is still focused on bringing in players who are ready for the Premier League, they are also holding negotiations with an England youth international in order to focus on the next generation of talent.

Saints talk about a young striker.

As was originally revealed by The Secret Scout X account, several teams have discussed moving for 18-year-old attacker Ajay Matthews, and Southampton is only one of them.

Although Matthews is still under contract with Middlesbrough, he will be leaving The Riverside at the end of the current campaign. The Saints are listed on the account as interested parties, but Celtic, Rangers, Southampton, Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, and Newcastle United will also be vying for Matthews’ signature.

According to the article, the teenager scored 16 goals in 17 starts for Boro’s minor squad last season, which may explain why a waiting list has developed for his services. Matthews also succeeded in breaking into Middlesbrough’s starting lineup this season, making appearances off the bench in the closing moments of the team’s April games against Cardiff City and Leeds United.

The striker also debuted late in the previous campaign for England’s young team. In three games for the Three Lions under-17 team in May, Matthews recorded an assist during a 4-2 victory over Northern Ireland.

Though Matthews hasn’t yet made an impression on the professional scene, there’s no denying that he’s someone to keep an eye on in the future. Given Southampton’s well-known track record of nurturing young talent, St. Mary’s may be among the greatest settings for the 18-year-old to mature and, ideally, earn his first Premier League start as a senior soon.
