Don't put him on” | Merson's abysmal take on West Ham star - The West Ham Way

The pundits often leave us scratching our heads with their wildly inaccurate takes. It really begs the question of whether former footballers should have such frequent opportunities to share their opinions.

Paul Merson is notorious for his questionable judgments, especially his evident bias towards Arsenal, which often frustrates fans. His tendency to favor the so-called “big 6” clubs only reinforces the perception that he overlooks talent outside of those teams.

West Ham supporters have repeatedly called him out for his glaring inaccuracies and nonsensical opinions. But his recent comments on Jarrod Bowen take the cake. Criticizing Bowen as only suitable for preserving a lead is a gross oversimplification. Bowen’s pivotal role in England’s recent win against Serbia, nearly assisting a goal and making crucial defensive contributions in just 20 minutes, completely undermines Merson’s dismissive assessment.

Merson also suggests Bowen lacks flair and game-changing ability, which ignores Bowen’s impressive technical skills and on-field impact. Furthermore, Merson’s comparison with Cole Palmer falls flat. While Palmer scored more Premier League goals than Bowen, the latter scored more non-penalty goals. Considering England’s circumstances, where Harry Kane typically takes penalties, Bowen’s goal-scoring prowess becomes more relevant.

Moreover, Palmer and Bowen play different positions, making Merson’s suggestion of one replacing the other irrelevant. Ultimately, Merson’s commentary lacks depth and fails to offer any substantial analysis. Disagreeing with Gareth Southgate’s decision to bring on Bowen is one thing, but providing a reasoned argument would at least add some value to the discussion.
