EFL pundit criticises the Huddersfield Town leadership and Andre Breitenreiter following relegation

Huddersfield Town’s five-year stay in the Championship came to an end over the weekend

Following the club’s relegation from the Championship, Sky Sports commentator Jobi McAnuff has harshly lambasted Andre Breitenreiter and the Huddersfield Town administration.

The Terriers’ five-year tenure in the second division came to an end on Saturday as they lost 2-0 against Ipswich Town on the final day of the season, confirming their relegation.

The Terriers, who spent two years in the Premier League between 2017 and 2019, are now gearing up for their first League One campaign since 2012.

Before their final game, with Town’s relegation fate all but certain, Breitenreiter gave an open forum to the media on the “big problems” his team has faced this season. However, McAnuff, a former winger for Watford, Reading, and Crystal Palace, was not impressed by the Terriers’ manager’s remarks.

“I must admit, I’ve been blown away by some of his remarks,” McAnuff remarked prior to Saturday’s Portman Road match, which was televised on Sky Sports.

Even if he could have had some difficulties there, he was aware of what needed to be done to make things right as soon as he entered through the door.

There were some early indications that he might be able to accomplish it, but it seems to me like someone who is trying to tell me, ‘Look, this has nothing to do with me.'” He has turned away from us.

“The preseason wasn’t right, the players aren’t healthy enough, they’re not together, and finally, as a manager entering the room, you have to go and figure out how to do that (make things right).”

“You look at Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl, who is a prime example of someone in a similar situation—a mess who enters and performs brilliantly.”

Post-game, McAnuff persisted in his criticism. “With what he’s done this week and that post-match [interview], it doesn’t seem like he’s going to be the man who’s going to be there next season,” the man stated. If I were the owners seeing that, I would have a lot of serious questions.

“I believe we’ve talked a lot about Ipswich Town’s excellent management and the outcome (promotion to the Premier League) today. Turn that around and observe how poorly Huddersfield Town has been managed.

It’s reasonable that you even return to Neil Warnock; it keeps them going. Make the choice to go on if he isn’t the one to lead you ahead.

We discussed making emotional decisions; who will lead us in this direction? They allow things to continue, then Darren Moore enters the picture, which doesn’t go well, and finally Breitenreiter enters the picture, who has obviously not been the best guy for the job.

“Talk about it [being] completely opposite here (at Ipswich Town)—poor recruitment, alignment again. You seem to have one complete failure and one success at either extreme of the range.

Nevertheless, in the post-match interview, former Watford and Birmingham City striker Troy Deeney, a fellow Sky Sports commentator, backed Breitenreiter, expressing sympathy for the head coach following his team’s final-day loss at Portman Road.

“When you walk in the door, you won’t know everything,” Deeney remarked. He is discussing their characters and whether or not they are professionals on a daily basis rather than whether or not they run. It is impossible to [know] unless you are inside.

“He is trying to see this country by travelling here from another country. It would have been reasonable if he had followed our lead, as we have been there for a long time, know the ropes, and can call up to fifteen different people. However, he has only done as instructed, and in any job, the details rarely match what is advertised. As a result, when he has gone in, he has discovered information.

“We’re doubting the skill and fitness of a couple of those players that we saw today. You question them and say, “Hold on, you’re playing in the Championship, and you’re not fit and you’re not ready.” We won’t name names because it would be unfair.

“In other words, he’s acknowledging that he could have done more during his tenure and that you can’t hold people accountable for their bad character,”
