According to Kris Boyd, Derek McInnes is the clear option to succeed Philippe Clement as Rangers’ manager.
On October 31, the former Ibrox striker told Scottish Sun Sport’s Go Ballistic that the Light Blues must have a plan in place to replace Clement and that if they don’t, the “powers that be” are to blame.
Boyd said that the Kilmarnock manager was the best option in Scotland, but he also said that the team should still be an attraction in the world of football, even at this low position.
When it comes to Scotland, Derek McInnes would be the first person that comes to mind, and I really believe that Rangers need to return to their fundamentals, he stated (17m 25s).
Derek won’t come out and say anything, though, in my opinion. He is not going to get involved because he is the manager of another Scottish Premiership team.
It’s clear that he has a history with Rangers and that, as a manager, he has been offered the position in the past but has declined for whatever reason.
In Scotland, he would most likely be the one to approach you first. However, despite their current struggles, Rangers remain a massive organisation with a global following.
Kris Boyd gives Rangers’ Kilmarnock manager a hint.
If everything else is equal, McInnes appears to be a very viable alternative for the Gers, but if he has already rejected the club, there is no assurance that he won’t do so now if the position seems like a hospital pass.

The position is essentially a one-year temporary position with tremendous pressure and prospects, and if Clement leaves, he will be the third manager to go before Christmas in as many seasons.
If a change is made, the next manager may eventually profit from some of the cost-cutting and future additions made under Clement, but since the Belgian is obviously receiving so few of those benefits at the moment, that may not happen.
The Rangers Review stated on October 31 that the “noises coming out of Ibrox” following the team’s 2-1 loss to Aberdeen the previous evening are that a change is not imminent.
Most clubs would at least have one or two names in mind for this scenario, but at Ibrox, that would not be the case because so many of the important decision-makers who would have made that choice are no longer in place.
The board may choose to just weather the storm, deciding that this season was always going to be difficult and that they persevered under similar conditions following their 3-0 Old Firm derby loss on September 1.
However, it is becoming more difficult to defend that when the on-field performances and Clement’s post-match remarks engender such a lack of confidence.
Rangers could be something if they could be relied upon to win every match in which they are the favourites, but they were defeated 1-0 by McInnes’ Killie team a week prior and narrowly defeated St Mirren on October 27.
The former Giants midfielder would need to perform consistently at Ibrox despite having two second-tier league titles (St Johnstone in 2009 and Kilmarnock in 2022) and a 2014 League Cup victory with Aberdeen.
And while he appears more realistic than a comeback for Ally McCoist, it’s questionable if he needs or wants that at this time when he looks reasonably established at Rugby Park.
