Everton and Celtic discuss signing Matt O’Riley, with the former seeking a club-record transfer cost.

According to HITC, Everton has held negotiations to sign Matt O’Riley, a midfielder for Celtic, this summer. According to a report by Graeme Bailey on the outlet’s website on July 2, there is a lot of interest in the Dane, and teams like West Ham, Fulham, Southampton, and Brentford have all discussed moving for the Hoops’ Player of the Year.

The Scottish Premiership champions reportedly want £30million for the midfielder, which would make him their most expensive sale ever, surpassing former Toffees-linked winger Jota’s move to the Saudi Pro League a year ago for £25m. There is also said to be interest in Europe from the likes of Atletico Madrid, Lyon, Monaco and Ben Godfrey’s new club Atalanta. Everton are expecting to sell their own big-money midfielder in the face of major interest [Alan Myers, 14 June], after receiving multiple approaches for Belgian star Amadou Onana [The Times, 14 June].

Amadou Onana exit from Everton to leave midfield gap to fill

Tim Iroegbunam from Aston Villa may have already joined on a permanent basis, but Sean Dyche still appears to be heavily focused on center midfield, as the team is vying for Florentino Luis from Benfica [Record, 30 June].

Clearly O’Riley isn’t going to be cheap, and because the Parkhead star has been a major part of their three straight league title wins it is no surprise that Brendan Rodgers’ team demands a huge sum.

The 23-year-old had a scorching start to the previous season and concluded with 19 goals and 18 assists from midfield across all competitions, despite his inability to sustain that level of play. However, he was inexplicably left out of Denmark’s roster for Euro 2024.

It appears that he will eventually advance, but obtaining the necessary funds will be costly. In order to address profit and sustainability concerns, the Toffees have extended their deadline to June 30. If they choose to fight for victory in this race, they may use this purchase as leverage when Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Onana leave over the course of the next year.
