According to Football Transfers, Everton has their sights set on Teden Mengi, the defender for Luton Town, for a possible summer transfer window acquisition.
This season, the 22-year-old has been an essential part of Rob Edwards’ team, appearing in 28 Premier League games as they attempt to stay in the standings.
Mengi may leave Kenilworth Road this summer, and according to Football Insider, Everton has identified the £10k-per-week center-back as one of their alternatives to take Jarred Branthwaite’s position. Branthwaite is a highly sought-after player who is drawing interest from both Manchester United and Newcastle United.
The former Manchester United academy product, who made two appearances for the first team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, will, however, face fierce competition from the likes of Bayer Leverkusen and Crystal Palace, who will be keeping a close eye on the player.
After the current season, Mengi’s future with the Hatters was expected to be reviewed; however, talks have paused due to uncertainties surrounding the club’s League position. Mengi, who Transfermarkt values at £10 million, is expected to leave Luton should they be relegated this season. Everton will be closely monitoring him.
Mengi move at Everton’s eye
This season’s Premier League campaign has seen ups and downs for Everton, both on and off the pitch. Even though their League standing may have suffered as a result of their point deductions, Sean Dyche made sure his team never gave up on their goal of survival, which they eventually accomplished.
Although it makes sense that the Toffees don’t have as much possession as they would like to in a game, the Merseyside team has improved their defensive strength. Their 49 goals given up this season rank them fourth in the Premier League, after Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal.
Their defensive strength was largely due to Branthwaite’s compactness; prominent European clubs are currently showing interest in signing him.
Everton may choose to start Mengi in lieu of the 21-year-old, since he has been Edward’s team’s rock this season.
Mengi has all it takes to succeed in Dyche’s system—he’s a vicious tackler, an aerial beast, and a good passer—but it’s unclear how aggressively the Toffees will pursue bringing the England u21 International to Goodison Park for the upcoming campaign.
